The Calstock Green Festival officially started in 1989 though there were earlier incarnations held on the Green going back to the early 1980's. This is a unique event which remains modest, low key and without the trappings other community festivals have been enforced to become. This is the original Community Festival which works as it’s enjoyed and holds its own strong identity. You won’t find Hearas fencing, Hi Viz or security army’s here. What you may find is the odd dog, a genuine sense of fun and warmth from everyone in attendance. This is an event that works on all levels and could be emulated without the pomp by other community festival organisers across our islands.

Scumbusting! What on earth is that? - Our Program Inclusion 2011

Back in 2006 a group of us came together; after working at the Maker Sunshine Festival. At this event we all contributed with the resources that we held to make recycling a focus for the festival. We were helped in 2006 as recycling was a news story! At the Maker Sunshine festival that year we recycled 60% of the waste generated over this 4 day event. In December 2006 a core group came together and created a constitution and structure to be formally known as the Maker Green Team. Our mission, we decided, was quite straight forward. We would offer volunteer waste and recycling schemes, firstly at Maker Heights, but in conjunction with other community festival organisations stretching from Gloucestershire to Cornwall. Since 2006 we have had a membership over 300 people, right across the UK and we have undertaken 27 festivals ranging from 500 people to 12,000. In our time we recycled for a total population, in excess of 100,000, or to put it another way a city the size of Bath!

So what on earth is Scumbusting? Well, this was a term formulated by volunteers within the Maker Green Team, describing their experience of collecting sorting and delivering a particular waste and recycling scheme at an event site. The word Scumbusting stuck, even though for some it was a bit of a hard one to digest!!

It is with great pleasure that we are able to fund, create and support a Scumbusting scheme for the Calstock Green Festival this year. We would really like you to be involved, by helping us to keep Calstock lovely and for you to give us a few hours of your time over the festival period. If you would like to volunteer with us please call Emma Wallace, our volunteer Co-ordinator, on (01837)52184. If you use the internet why not visit us here, see what we do and download our volunteer form for 2011! www.scumbusting-england.co.uk

Please come and see us on the Green in our information stall and use the bins which will be located across the festival site!

Have a lovely festival!

Best wishes Daryn Manchip & Emma Wallace
