Maker Green Team Blog Welcome to the 2010 Summer News Update

The Maker Green Team have undertaken five events thus far this Summer.

Calstock Festival - Cornwall

Members of the Maker Green Team following our summer events meeting assisted the waste clearance at the Calstock Festival. This was an independent action and as a thank you to the organisers of this magnificent community festival. Calstock is The model for community events – low key, small, no Harras fencing, behind the scenes stewarding and a really strong sense of community responsibility and participation .

LLAMA Festival – North Devon

Members of the Maker Green Team scumbusted the ‘Valley of the Rocks’ campsite. This location was to accommodate the needs of some of the LLAMA festivals attendees. We were thanked by the Exmoor National Park Rangers Service & a member of Lynton Town Council for our action.

Rame Dance, The Maker Festival for 2010 – Cornwall

The Maker Green Team undertook a slimmed down Maker Festival this summer. With 30 scumbusters we recycled and cleared Maker Heights over a 9 day period. At Maker we introduced the new Maker Green Team Kitchen housed within a new blue marquee. Rame Dance was a resounding success once again setting realistic impact standards for UK festivals.

Plymouth Under Age Festival - Devon

The Maker Green Team once again working with Plymouth Race Equality Council young volunteers, Plymouth Music Collective, Plymouth City Council and the National Trust facilitated this one day youth event in the beautiful grounds of Saltram House. The Sun came this year too. Thank you to Oli James & Kevin Mott.

Two Thousand Trees Festival – Gloucestershire

The Maker Green Team undertook this event over an extended duration of 12 days this summer. There was a greater capacity this summer and as a result consumption levels rocketed. With a team of almost 40 volunteers and a mechanised waste scheme we battled on with a 50% young team. Unfortunately this summer attendees proved to be very messy unlike previous years. There seemed at this event an almost ‘unanimous disregard’ towards the land that these people were guests on. Consequently the site was much dirtier with bins being re sleeved about every 15 minutes in high demand locations. Though exhausting, we have leant a hard lesson regarding future provision at this event – more bins, better receptacles of some sort and for the future, a greater volunteer base on site. Most importantly 2000 Trees forgot to include ‘the green message’ which was ALWAYS at the forefront of the event. Recycling as attendee information was omitted in the events program this summer. One possible cost being what we had to deal with and what was just disregarded by the colluding site population despite our efforts. There was also a £700 overspend ( power generation, travel, fuel & extended volunteer costs) which we have had to recover (in present cash flow) from the Maker Green Team 2000 Trees Festival donation this summer. We hope to facilitate proactive changes for the 2011 event

Salt Fest 2010 - Cornwall.

The Maker Green Team will be attending the ‘Salt Fest’ Community Music Event over the weekend of 20th-22nd August. Working with members of Transition Saltash our aim is to recycle as much waste that can be transported from the waterside location. We are supporting Transition Saltash with a small mentoring group of Maker Green Team local volunteers and sharing our equipment to enable their operation to succeed.

Aeon Festival 2010 - Devon.

The Maker Green Team will be providing a Tea, Coffee and Information display marquee at the Aeon Festival, Nr Crediton, Devon at the end of August. We will also have a small group of Maker Green Team volunteers supporting the Aeon Festival’s waste operation on site. If you are attending the Aeon Festival please come and see what the Maker Green Team have achieved since 2005 with Voluntary Community Event Recycling. Please support us and make a donation (just a pound) and have a tea or coffee on your visit.
