Volunteering at Events
Volunteering your time with the Maker Green Team.
Since 2006 the Maker Green Team has been working with festival organisations to facilitate total & partial recycling. re-use & waste operation schemes at UK festival locations. As an organisation we work with both community sector events organisers, private festival concerns & local authority bodies to facilitate needs. Each year we ask for volunteers to support our events. Currently we have a pool of volunteers based across Southern England & Wales. We always need more volunteers as not everyone can be everywhere all the time.
Questions and Answers!
What is our expectation when considering volunteering your time as a Scumbuster?
We ask all potential volunteers to support our Constitution Aims (please see above within menu section). Our constitution is a written statement as to why we exist and what we wish to achieve as an organisation in terms of what we do. If you feel you share our aspirations we would welcome your involvement as a new Maker Green Team volunteer/member. Membership as a Maker Green Team volunteer is free.
Volunteering with us at events.
We ask members to offer a minimum of four hours volunteer time each day (over the duration of each particular event). This is organised within a rota operation. From experience this is never as a block time, i.e. a straight set of four hours in a row. Generally this pans out as two hours each morning, one hour later and a further hour at evening time. The basis of this rota scheme is the facilitate the waste clearance and recycling needs at particular events by the nature of the demands placed upon us.
Duties as a Scumbuster.
Volunteers facilitate greeting duties as a dissemination role, litter picking, on going recycling facilitation, wheelie bin collection and renewal. Scumbusters also cover food trader and bar waste provision, urgent waste incidents & cross contamination monitoring. Each of these different roles are organised evenly through our tried and operated rota scheme at events.
Volunteer organisation.
At events an induction meeting is arranged, Here volunteer health and safety training is given particularly addressing issues faced when volunteering within Maker Green Team operations. Volunteers are placed within rota groups which are mentored by Maker Green Team core facilitators - these mentors are your points of contact through out your daily duties.
Who can become a volunteer at events?
If you are over 16 and under 70 (there's no top end reallly!) we'd would welcome your involvement. If under 18 we need the permission of a parent or guardian, but you must be over 16 years of age (we may need proof of your age).
Can I volunteer at all events facilitated by the Maker Green Team?
We would like to encourage volunteering at all events we facilitate. Some events however are very popular. We can not guarantee places at all events so we operate a 'first come first serve proviso' with this. Please follow our procedures i.e. register your interest on this site. Then write an email (using the contact button above)about your interest in volunteering requesting a volunteer form
Emma will then send you this back by email. Fill out and return.
We will do our best to get you a place at your requested event (options on this form) but if full we will try to offer another placement if this suits your interest.
No deposits or payments taken.
The Maker Green Team does not accept deposits or payments to work as a volunteer at events facilitated by us. We hold a view that this can sometimes exclude the very best volunteer interest - we don't exclude! The Maker Green Team works on a level of trust with each individual volunteer but we have measures in place to prevent abuse of our goodwill.
Volunteer insurance and public liability cover at events
The Maker Green Team operate under and within existing volunteer insurance and public liability provision facilitated & operated by 'host events organisations'. These are the overall festival organisers and 'not' the Maker Green Team. The duty of care falls within individual self action, and the provision operated within events organisers policy sheduals provided and agreed at the outset towards the Maker Green Team at each unique event.
Maker Green Team family member and child care provision at events.
We have different arrangements with different festival organisers regarding free access or not for under sixteens. Some festival organisations offer 'free' access to Maker Green Team volunteer parent/s /guardian/s children but please don't assume this is at all events we operate at - this is not automatic. Please state on Maker Green Team Volunteer Application Forms your particular needs. If in doubt please contact the Maker Green Team co-ordinator by email the above contact button. The Maker Green Team does not operate or provide crèches or nursery provision at events. However, there may be provision at some events organised and offered within existing festival arrangements towards attendee provision - please check with particular events of interest for details.
Maker Green Team car parking & vehicle access passes.
At locations we offer a unique camping & live in vehicle spaces. This is usually with existing crew camping areas or near our temporary waste transfer facility established on festival sites. For owners and users of cars - please provide vehicle registration plate details. Most events operate car parks and there is an expectation to park cars in these areas. We provide car parking passes to all Maker Green Team volunteers who use these. If you own or use a live in vehicle i.e. towing vehicle with caravan, camper van, van (used as live in), truck, coach, bus. Please also provide vehicle registration details within your Maker Green Team volunteer application form. We will send you car parking passes and live in vehicle passes unique to each event facilitated.
No dogs policy at sites
Most UK festivals don't allow dogs* on to sites within licensing conditions. Please leave your dog with other family members or friends during your time at events as a Maker Green Team Volunteer.
What you need to bring.
We ask volunteers only to bring what you need - make a check list before you leave! Please bring a tent or shelter, torch sleeping bag, roll mat, cutlery, mug, two sets spare warm dry clothing. Importantly, please bring a good quality, totally water proof coat & leggings, sturdy walking boots and everything else you need. Scumbusings fun, but messy - so be prepared! Most importantly, bring your happy shiny self!
What we offer in exchange for volunteer time as a Maker Green Team member.
As a Maker Green Team volunteer we offer free access to pay events facilitated by our operations and your involvement. We offer meal tickets or crew catering dependant on the provision of each event - we hope to be able to offer all diets. We offer a unique camping /live in vehicle park up space at our Team Camp at festival locations. We hope to offer wall to wall sunshine but we can't guarantee this!
