Hi, I’m Emma, and I got involved with the Maker Green Team at the 2006 Maker Sunshine Festival. After attending Maker I hooked up with some fellow scumbusters and stayed on site to help with the re-cycling task. Who would of thought that a year later I’d be looking forward to a summer of scum once more! So here is my story. One minute I was stuck behind an office desk while the sun was shinning brightly outside, and wishing I was out there! Feeling very unhealthy both inside and out! The solution to this feeling came from a very unexpected source, a pile of scum! So why pick up trash I hear you cry! The answer to this is three fold. Firstly the benefits of helping out the environment and the community at the same time is a very satisfying task. To be part of a group of people committed to enabling others to get things done is a real buzz, its great to invest time in something that is positive and proactive. This inevitably improves your mental health no end. Everybody benefits and that’s a rare thing these days! I’m sure some of you out there are still not convinced, but the health of your insides is just the start! Trash isn’t going to kill you and in fact a week of scumbusting actually improves your physical health (and unlike the gym or an expensive health farm) it wont cost a fortune!! All that trash clearing helps you loose weight, stay active and benefit from a great tan (that tanning studio’s would charge the earth for!) So, if your not convinced by benefits of environmental improvement--- think about the self-improvement! So, there it is mental health, physical health and the environment all benefit from the simple scumbusting task!!!
Why do we do it?
